Re: Copyright on Older Materials

Here is another "twist."

1962: Researcher prepares Inventories of graves in local cemeteries. A copy
of that Inventory is given to a county historical society library.

1989: Researcher updates and significantly revises that Inventory & copyrighted
to local library collection. No copy is given to the county historical society.

2001: Regional "researcher" purchases photocopies of 1962 version from county historical society
library and places it on a website linked to Rootsweb with their
own 2001 copyright.

Concern: outdated and incomplete material with 2001 Copyright misleading.

Has anyone else run into a situation like this and, if so, how has it been handled ?

Thanks for all your help,

Leigh

| Amen to Terry's copyright code. You can't control what a fellow is going to
| do after you sell him a bottle of whiskey...that's his business. If he's
| obviously drunk, you can and should refuse to sell him the hooch.
|
| If a fellow signs off on your copy request form that plainly tells him that
| the copy is for his/her personal and scholarly research, then sell them the
| bottle. If they say "I'm going to market a whole line of Osama Bin Laden
| crosshair target t-shirts with this photo," then you have a pretty good
| indication that the customer is headed for a DUI...
