I'm happy to find a place like this where I can learn and add to my understanding of Biblical Greek. Unlike most everybody here, I am not in any field of theology or academia, nor am I a student enrolled in a formal program of study. But my thirst for knowledge is genuine! I love languages, and I studied German and Spanish in college as well as memorizing quite a bit of Latin for music in choir.
Welcome, James -- there are actually quite a few here who are self-taught in Greek -- tell us a bit about what-all you've done with Greek so far, and how we can help -- e.g. do you have a grammar book? which one? I myself started out with just Strong's back in the early 1990s... it was about 5 years before someone told me I should get a grammar book and work through it... others here suggest other approaches as well, such as using modern language methods... Welcome!
Susan, I am just beginning my study of Biblical Greek. I have a well worn copy of Strong's that I have used for many years, but I am finding that sometimes it can actually cause confusion because of my lacking basic knowledge of the language. There are many books for learning Biblical Greek on Amazon, and it is hard for me to know what to buy. Is there a grammar book that you recommend?
Absolutely right. In fact, when I first "started learning" ancient Greek using Strong's dictionary and concordance, because I had not known about this forum yet, it caused me more confusion than I would ever have thought possible. Besides working through a proper first grammar as Mike and others suggested, you might want to get some other grammars for reference such as Smyth's which can be downloaded at http://www.textkit.com/learn/ID/142/author_id/63/.James Booth wrote:I have a well worn copy of Strong's that I have used for many years, but I am finding that sometimes it can actually cause confusion because of my lacking basic knowledge of the language.
