I just found this fascinating link on Micheal Palmer's bibliography page.
It discusses the oral tradition of North Carolina and its relevance for
understanding the oral tradition that underlies Herodotus:

Some of this may be very interesting in analyzing the oral traditions
presumed to underlie the New Testament as well.
Note: a broad, general discussion of this is probably out of scope on
B-Greek, but I think that applying this to specific passages would not be.
