                        JUSTIN
Captain, I was wondering if you have a phone
                to shore I could use?

                        MATRE'D
I found out about the drugs.

                        JUSTIN
                Really?

Maxine will slip away but before she can get too far, Wolf
will grab her and force her into G.

                        MATRE'D
Which is what we're here to talk about. Brad/
                Brenda, you want to begin?

                        JACK
                You're starting with a liar.

                        LYLLA
                Jack, shut up.

                        JACK
I don't take orders from you.

                        MATRE'D
I'm fully prepared to call the police.

                        JUSTIN
You have a phone on board?

                        MATRE'D
                Of course.

                        JUSTIN
Could I use it? It's urgent.

                        MATRE'D
I thought you'd want to be in on this.

                        SUSANNE
I could call, Justin -- there's no need for me
                to be in on it.

                        JUSTIN
                Can she use the phone?

                        MATRE'D
                It's that way.

                        SUSANNE
                I'll see if she's home.

                        JUSTIN
                Thanks, Susanne.

                        MATRE'D
Brad/Brenda, I asked you to begin.

                        JACK
I don't have to stay here and listen to lies.

                        MATRE'D
I told you, I'm prepared to call the police.
If you want to leave the story to Brad/Brenda and not
                contribute, fine.

                        LYLLA
                He'll tell his version.

                        JACK
Damn right, I will. I never would have--

                        MATRE'D
Please, I'd like to hear from Brad/Brenda first.
                Brad/Brenda . . .

                        WAITPERSON
It started about six months ago.

                        MATRE'D
You've been smuggling dope on my resort
                for six months?

                        WAITPERSON
You want me to explain or not?

                        JACK
He's been doing dope for years.

                        LYLLA
                Wait your turn, Jack.

                        MATRE'D
                Brad/Brenda . . .

                        WAITPERSON
Well, I was broke, you know. The wages aren't
what keeps me working here, right?

                        MATRE'D
If you're going to try and use your pay as an
                excuse--

                        LYLLA
Please, let him tell his story.

                        WAITPERSON
I love my job. That's why I don't want to
                lose it.

                        MATRE'D
Find time to think of that.

                        WAITPERSON
Then what's the point of talking, you know?

                        JACK
                Especially lies.

                        LYLLA
Look, I also want to know what's been going on
around here and I suggest we let each of them,
Brad/Brenda and Jack, tell their story one at a
time, and we refrain from interruptions. Is it
                possible to do that?

                        MATRE'D
                I'm sorry. Go on, Brad/Brenda . . .

                        WAITPERSON
It was after my parents were in their wreck,
actually, and their insurance wasn't covering
everything. They didn't know how they were
going to pay the bills. I've known Jack since
college, off and on, we were even roommates
for a while, and of course I'd heard through
the grapevine that he was dealing--

                        JACK
                I'm going to deny--

                        LYLLA
                Jack! You'll get your turn.

                        WAITPERSON
Anyway, I ran into him and kind of inquired if
he needed any help, you know, some way I could
make a few bucks on the side. He got the idea
of using the resort to store the stash he got in
Astoria, off one of the mother ships, then I
could take it on into Cascade Locks, where his
boss could come off the mountain, off the Mt.
Hood area, and pick it up there. Jack said he
was worried about the current pickup site, he
was getting paranoid, thinking the cops were
on to him, watching him -- he'd been looking
for another way to get the dope from the coast
to the mountain, and Edgefied seemed
like just the ticket to hide it at. And I
                could make some
extra bucks on the side. Then later he had me
bring it here, to Portland, he was going to
                handle it all himself.

                        JACK
May I tell you the truth now?

                        LYLLA
                Is that all, Brad/Brenda?

                        WAITPERSON
No, there's more. Well, I did this for a few
months, right, giving the money I was making,
which was pretty good, and the risk didn't
seem like much at the time, I was giving
everything to my parents for their bills, well
most of it anyway, and everything was fine
until this wedding got scheduled. A couple
weeks ago when the church people were out here
checking out the resort and figuring out
how to deliver the bride to the ballroom, and
all that stuff, this church lady, Maxine, she
started asking me about drugs, I don't know
why, I don't know what she knew -- but it was
too close for comfort, as far as I was
                concerned.

                        JACK
                You never told me that.

                        LYLLA
                Jack-- . . . go on . . .

                        WAITPERSON
I mean, that really spooked me. Did she know
I was working with Jack and delivering dope
from the coast or what? If not, why
was she so interested in drugs? It was really
                weird -- and scary.

                        JACK
                Maxine's crazy, man.

                        WAITPERSON
Tonight she approached me again -- she knew
about Jack, and she said there was going to be
a big transfer here tonight, Jack's sister was
buying and he was delivering. She said that I
should call the police, so they'd be waiting
                when we dock.

                        JACK
Then I think we need to find Maxine.

                        LYLLA
                Not yet. Any more?

                        WAITPERSON
                That's about it. Sir, I know I shouldn't
have done this. As soon as Maxine started
asking questions, suddenly I realized how
crazy I'd been, how much risk I was taking,
not only to myself but to you, to Edgefield and
                the rest of the staff.

                        MATRE'D
You should've thought of that earlier.

                        WAITPERSON
The only thing I can say is I was worried
about my parents, I didn't know what the hell
would happen to them, there's only me and I've
never been much of a breadwinner, I'd always
gone for jobs on the run and whatever, and now
they really needed me and I couldn't help
them. It never occurred to me to get into any
of this until I ran into Jack. And then I
thought . . . well, all the rest.

                        LYLLA
Thank you for being so cooperative.

                        WAITPERSON
I guess this means I'm canned, huh?

                        LYLLA
Not necessarily, I would hope. Perhaps the
                matre'd will find some extenuating
                circumstances.

                        MATRE'D
Right now I'd like to hear Jack's version.

                        JUSTIN
                Can we ask questions?

                        LYLLA
                Surely.

                        JUSTIN
Did you get the idea that Maxine was involved
in any kind of drugs traffic herself -- or was
she just asking general questions about drugs?
The first time, I mean -- before tonight.

                        WAITPERSON
She just asked general questions. Did I know
there were mother ships on the coast?
Wouldn't it be easy to smuggle dope on the
resort here? Stuff too damn close for
                comfort.

                        JUSTIN
She worked for the Brodeys, so of course she'd
                know about Jack's reputation.

                        JACK
                Screw you, too.

                        LYLLA
                Jack--

                        JUSTIN
Unless she's into drugs trafficking herself --
if Jack were a competitor, so to speak, it
would give her sufficient reason, beyond any
kind of personal grudge, to want to remove him
from the scene. Does that make sense? Set a
trap for Jack and Trudy, in order to eliminate
                the competition.

                        LYLLA
                Except Trudy isn't a customer -- at least, I
                don't think so.

                        WAITPERSON
I don't know anything about that part. She
just wanted me to frame Jack and Trudy.

                        JACK
Of course she isn't a customer -- Jesus.

                        LYLLA
Jack, you want to tell your version now?
