TIME CODE: 49:30
Jack will give his version, during which Susanne will enter
and listen. /en9/ TIME CODE: 49:30 (note: Waitperson
referred to as Brad henceforth: with understanding, this can
be Brad or Brenda, depending on casting).
JACK
So you believe what he told you or what?
LYLLA
It's too soon to say -- do you agree with what
he said?
JACK
He knows better. That crap about his dying
parents, give me a break -- Brad's a cokehead
from way back, he was doing this to get a good
deal on his own blow, wholesale so to speak,
not to save his--
WAITPERSON
That's not true.
JUSTIN
Gentlemen, one version at a time please.
Brad, you told your story; now if you have
anything to say, Jack, say it.
JACK
What I could say would blow your mind.
LYLLA
Are you telling us you have nothing to say?
JACK
What I don't understand is, what's in it for
me?
MATRE'D
I plan to report this to the police--
LYLLA
If that's the best way to go: that was the
agreement.
MATRE'D
I won't compromise the good name of this resort,
or my reputation, or the reputation of the
McMenamin brothers, or the board of directors, or-
JUSTIN
You may not have to. Jack?
JACK
I don't have to explain anything to him.
LYLLA
Jack, if you'd be cooperative, none of this
will have to go beyond this moment.
MATRE'
I haven't agreed to that.
JACK
See there? The guy's got a cop mentality and
if you, man, think you'll going to frame me
with using your precious resort to run drugs,
then I say you're going to have to prove it in
court. I'm here for one reason and one reason
only -- and that has to do with my sister, not
with drugs.
WAITPERSON
You're lying through your teeth.
JACK
Hey, I'll catch you people in court, how's
that?
JUSTIN
"He who complains too much . . ."
JACK
Think anything you want. I know my rights.
LYLLA
Jack, you're making this more difficult on you
than it has to be. If you're only a cog in
the machine, so to speak--
JUSTIN
He may be running the whole machine shop.
MATRE'D
Whatever the case, I can't drop this. As soon
as this wedding party ends, it's my duty to report
this -- and
the names of all involved -- to the
authorities.
WAITPERSON
If you have to do that, I'm sorry. I made a
mistake.
MATRE'D
I'll take that into consideration --
especially if you tell the police what you've
told us.
JACK
I have a few things to tell the police myself.
LYLLA
Then tell us, for God's sake! I'm sure we can
settle matters without going to the police.
MATRE'D
I don't understand why you say that -- being
an attorney.
LYLLA
My fear is that there's much more here than
meets the eye -- and that a premature
investigation, by the authorities, would have
the real culprits running and getting off scot
free.
JUSTIN
I concur. I'd like to hear more about
Maxine's role.
JACK
So would I, as a matter of fact.
SUSANNE
I couldn't get ahold of Helen, Justin, but I
did run into Evelyn and she's overheard some
things about the drugs on board. Not
involving Jack or any of the crew, though --
involving Angelo and the male church member
who brought the bride aboard.
JUSTIN
Angelo?
SUSANNE
Yes. I forget the other's name.
MATRE'D
Yang Wolf, if I remember correctly.
SUSANNE
She overheard a drugs sale being arranged -- I
think Angelo was the buyer.
JACK
Who's he trying to buy from?
SUSANNE
I'm not sure. I got the impression, though,
that Angelo and Wolf were in business together
on this, Wolf was making the arrangements or
something, for the sale to Angelo.
JUSTIN
Cokescam. The church has been accused of
dealing in drugs -- some preliminary charges
are in the courts in California right now.
LYLLA
Yang Richard, the groom, is a lawyer -- he may
know more about it.
JUSTIN
Worth checking out.
JACK
What happens if this Angelo guy is guilty,
he's here to buy drugs?
MATRE'D
The important thing is, who is supplying it?
Brad? Was he a buyer?
WAITPERSON
I don't know, honestly. I was just working
for Jack.
JUSTIN
And Jack isn't talking. Which I am beginning
to find very interesting indeed.
JACK
Hey, I'm not a seller for Angelo, okay? I
don't even believe he's buying.
LYLLA
Why not?
JACK
I got reasons.
MATRE'D
I have another candidate, or two rather: the
groom and the Priestess. I'm sure I recognize
them from New Orleans -- where they were
accused of dealing drugs.
LYLLA
Now that's interesting.
JUSTIN
Indeed. Were they convicted?
MATRE'D
They disappeared.
JUSTIN
I have a question: where are the drugs now?
MATRE'D
Brad has them.
WAITPERSON
I gave the stash to Jack.
JACK
They're safe, don't worry about that. And
nobody here is getting any either.
WAITPERSON
If the church actually is involved in drugs,
if there's an actual sale going, it'd be with
their own drugs.
SUSANNE
Involving Yang Wolf.
JUSTIN
And possibly Maxine as well. Indeed, by what
I've heard just now, perhaps the entire church
hierarchy.
MATRE'D
Of course, this is all speculation.
LYLLA
If you're worried about your reputation,
then surely you want to find out if
there are, in fact, more drugs hidden here. The
way to find out, I think, is to let this sale
take place -- to see if we can get evidence
that it's taken place.
JUSTIN
We can't do that staying up here.
SUSANNE
What if I tried to get drugs from Angelo?
JUSTIN
He no longer trusts you -- that'd be too
dangerous.
LYLLA
I could try.
JUSTIN
Perhaps.
LYLLA
Or Jack could play into Angelo's hands -- if
he were cooperative.
JACK
I'm clean and free, man. Count me out of
everything. Later.
He exits, will go to A. /ex2/ TIME CODE: 53:00

MATRE'D
What do you suggest we do now?
JUSTIN
Keep our eyes and ears open -- and hope the
sale takes place.
LYLLA
I'll see what I can get from Angelo. Justin,
why don't you talk to Yang Richard about the
cokescam case?
JUSTIN
You got it. Susanne, do you think Trudy might
know anything about this?
SUSANNE
I really doubt it. Her concern is Maxine.
JUSTIN
Who may be involved. Why don't you stick
around Trudy?
SUSANNE
Okay.
MATRE'D
How can I help?
LYLLA
By trusting us -- we want to clear your
reputation as much as you do -- because we
have clients to protect.
JUSTIN
Yours is one tough customer.
LYLLA
Jack has always been his own worst enemy.
He'll thank me later.
MATRE'D
Well, thank you, all of you -- I'm not sure I
understand what's going on but I'm not letting
anyone out of here until I make up my mind
about all this.
LYLLA
Fair enough. Shall we?
Lylla, Justin and Susanne leave, the matre'd and Brad stay at
the bar. /ex4/ /ex5/ /ex9/ TIME CODE: 53:30 /h7/ /h8/
