In
1973,
a fire at the National Personal Records Center in St. Louis Missouri destroyed
many World War Two service records including apparently Felix A.
Cizewski's. For veterans like my father, the Records Center is using
alternate
record sources to reconstruct certain basic service data which
usually verifies military service and provide a
Certification of Military Service. This Certification can be used for
any purpose for which the
original discharge document was used, including the application for
veterans benefits.
Veterans, families, and family history researchers not be discouraged
by the fire and should go to the
National
Archives web site for instructions and forms to see if their
records were among those that survived the fire or at least obtain the
reconstructed Certification of Military Service.
