S.S. Alanthus (American Freighter, 1918)

Alanthus, a 2551 gross ton wooden-hulled freighter, was built at Newark, New Jersey, in 1918 for the United States Shipping Board's Emergency Fleet Corporation. In October 1918 the newly-completed ship was examined by the U.S. Navy for possible acquisition and assigned the registry ID # 3593. However, she was not taken over for Naval service. Like virtually all of the World War I shipbuilding program's wooden freighters, Alanthus had a short life. However, in early September 1920, while on her last voyage, she and her small crew performed an essential role during the rescue of the men trapped in the sunken submarine USS S-5. Laid up after her arrival in port, Alanthus disappears from the Lloyd's shipping register after the 1922-1923 edition.

This page features all the views we have concerning the freighter Alanthus of 1918.
