In May 1917 the U.S. Navy purchased the 128-foot steam yacht Satilla, which had been built in 1902 at Neponset, Massachusetts. She was placed in commission at the end of that month as USS Satilla (SP-687) and was assigned to patrol duties along the coast of Maine throughout the First World War. Though damaged in a collision with USS Ibis (SP-3051) in mid-1918, she was repaired and back on station within a few months. Satilla remained in active service at least until mid-September 1919. Stricken from the Navy List in early November of that year, she was sold in March 1920.
This page features all the views we have concerning USS Satilla (SP-687) and the civilian yacht of that name.

The following photograph probably shows USS Satilla (SP-687) or USS Thetis (SP-391). These two former yachts had very similar dimensions and were built by the same builder at about the same time.
Note: The Ships Histories Branch of the Naval History and Heritage Command holds one other view of the steam yacht Satilla, taken prior to her Naval service. |
