USS Thetis (SP-391), 1917-1920

USS Thetis, a 97.6 ton (displacement) section patrol vessel, was built at Neponset, Massachusetts, in 1901 as a civilian steam yacht. Purchased by the Navy in June 1917 for World War I service, she was placed in commission in July of that year and thereafter served in southern New England waters. Thetis was decommissioned after the conflict's end and stricken from the Navy list in March 1919. She was sold in July 1920.

This page features the only views we have related to USS Thetis (SP-391) and the civilian steam yacht Thetis.

The following photograph probably shows USS Thetis (SP-391) or USS Satilla (SP-687). These two former yachts had very similar dimensions and were built by the same builder at about the same time.

Small Patrol Vessel (Converted Yacht)

In port, during the World War I era.
This former yacht is very probably either USS Satilla (SP-687) or USS Thetis (SP-391). If she is Satilla then the photograph was taken circa 1917, before the extension of the deckhouse to occupy more of the space forward of the smokestack.

Note: The Ships' Histories Branch of the Naval Historical Center holds another photograph of the steam yacht Thetis, taken prior to her Navy service. Seen from off the port bow, she is anchored offshore, with a boat suspended from davits amidships and an embarkation ladder lowered aft.
The original print is mounted on the "SP" data card for Thetis (SP-391).
