Well you've certainly muddied the subject!!

I'd interpret 'spar' to be 'spur' and that puts Northern Spy as a 'spur-bearer'.
Something must be wrong with my definition of 'spur', because you'll get no apples
if you espalier a Northern Spy ... even if you wait about seven years (NS is late
to bear).

We need a lesson in Tree types I, II, III, and IV.  Maybe Ed Fackler is reading
these emails?
