[nafex] Backyard and Beginning Commerical Fruit Workshop



Good Morning, NAFEX

      This is to anounce a one day workshop on Backyard and Small Commercial Fruit Production.

     Date of Workshop:  Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002  (9 am through 4:30 pm)

     Location:  Virginia Vintage Orchard, Rural Ridge, VA.

     Topics to be covered:

     1.  Planning the Orchard including Site Selection, Soils, Size of Planting and Varieties.

     2.  Pest Management Approaches.

     3.  Marketing Approaches including Roadside Retail, U-Pick and Farm Markets.

     4.  Pruning Techniques.  A walking demo including both semi-dwarf trees and dwarf on trellis.

     5.  General Cultural Requirements including Pollination, Harvest/storage and Weed Control.

     6.  An Overview of Common Mistakes.

     This workshop is being hosted by Charlotte Shelton.  Among others, Tom Burford will deliver
his vast experience on many topics above.
