[nafex] Calcium Sprays

Dear Don,

At our NAFEX meeting in Illinois, the Director of the Univ. of Ill.
program promoted calcium sprays for apples and pears claiming it made them
larger and more disease resistant. He did not begin until the fruit was
about the size of a marble. There is an article on the subject in the Good
Fruit Growers Magazine (Sept 1999) and they recommended spraying 5 times
during the season beginning in May and applied at 3 wk intervals. Sprays
were not applied when temp was above 80 degrees F. They used twice as much
calcium on apples than on pears (1.5 lbs CaCl/l00 gallons for pear vs 3.0
lbs./100 gal. for apples). I have done this with pears the last few years
and I do think it is helpful. It can burn new young leaves and as you
indicated, may be corrosive to the sprayer.

                                 Regards, Ethan
