Kirk,
The article was not stating that the earthworms were eating the plants, the
concern was that they were decomposing the fallen leaves and forest floor
duff at a more rapid rate than normal and thus possibly changing the forest
ecosystem to favor species that hadn't historically been components of the
native vegetation.
