What Dr.E will tell you is that you have to set the
conditions to out compete the weeds. Traditional row
crops grow best at a fungal to bacteria ratio of 1:1.
Weeds are other and like jeff said are an indication
of various inbalances in the soils minerals or
indicators of compaction or excesses or deficiencies
of some element. Example- Kocia thrives in a bacteria
dominated compact soil. Viney/woody weeds usually in
high potasium (above 7.5%)soils, thistle as jeff wrote
in high nitrates, so on and so forth. look in Arden
Andersons book, theres a section on weeds thats good.
