Re: [compost_tea] Re: Filtering ACT
Alex - There is a poll on this compost tea site on addition of molasses, ha=
ve a look. Right, 2oz. is not much in 25 gals but the tea was analysed and=
had good numbers for both active and total bacteria. Active bacteria at 2=
00ppm is only about 0.67 ounces of bacteria in 25 gals. It's not hard to i=
magine that 2 oz. of sugar can grow way more than 0.67 ounces of total bact=
eria. It goes something like this for 25 gals of tea:
25gals x 8.35pounds/gal x 16oz/pound = 3,340 ounces of tea x 0.000200 (20=
0ppm recommended active bacteria) = 0.668oz. AB
I'm not sure why the basic recipe in the Compost Tea Brewing Manual calls f=
or 16 ounces of molasses/50 gal brew. It will certainly grow a lot of bact=
eia at just 0.2 percent of 50 gals. I understand that the 5% rate is meant=
to actually inhibit the bacteria for a fungal brew.

dave: thx for the info... but 2oz. in 25 gal, isn't that like 0,06% molas=
ses? that would be far from the 5% I recall reading as a max. here in this =
forum...

Alex - Maybe there are paint filters with different size holes? I can fi=
lter five gallons about as quickly as it comes out of my 50 gal tank, maybe=
30 seconds. I put the 5 gal pail below the brewer outlet valve and hold t=
he filter bag so the stream of tea passes through it. A little shaking is =
needed sometimes to keep the materials moving to the bottom of the bag. I =
don't substitute anything for molasses, just use less of it. I've had good=
SFI numbers using 2oz. molasses in 25 gals of tea starting with a few poun=
ds of vermicompost.
