Part of what is so fascinating about CSA is the endless variation on the theme. And prices, budgets and planning is very central to that local adaptation.

I think what Steve speaks in favor of is the best case scenario, and hopefully many CSA's who aren't at that point now will keep evolving in that direction. But look at the many ways community can be nourished no matter what your limitations.

Here in Iowa, many CSA's use a farmers mkt price as a base guideline, because thats what is common and known. Where members are supportive (and there is always a continuum to try to gage), a premium is added on for the organic methods used. If you're not familiar with prices in your area, many states collect farmers market prices on a regular basis.

If older CSA's exist in your area, talk to them (or in communities of similar size, income, education and cultural background as yours)--if their way doesn't make sense, a concrete example will often inspire your ideas of what would work for you.
