anti-fooling paint for boats is highly poisonous (thats why they are used), it does
not seem to me to be a "sustainable" mean to use in a permaculture perspective (the
same for used motor oil), putting deliberatly poison in the soil sounds horrible to
me.

Charring is IMHO a very effective and environmentally friendly means.
If you think of very long term poles, a buildup with stones and event. some
mortar/cement is a solution to keep wood off the moist/rotting earth environment.

live fence = hedge is also a good solution to explore, by the means of living poles
too, it would not rot and it would maintain itself .
I try to use such poles to buildup a fence to keep off deers from my garden, I keep
som trees as poles and trim them slim, and use the branches as horizontal threads.
