Hello, this is an August 16 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina, sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report include:

WESTERN GREBE
CURLEW SANDPIPERS
BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS
REDDISH EGRETS

A WESTERN GREBE is being seen at Lake Paul Wallace near Bennettsville, SC.
This bird has been present since at least 8-13 and has been enjoyed by many
birders from both Carolinas. The best vantage point for seeing the grebe is
from the peninsula just off SC Rte. 385. For more details, call Barbara
Gearheart at 910-277-0272.

Up to two CURLEW SANDPIPERS have been reported from North Pond at Pea Island
NWR on the Outer Banks (NC). Reports of these birds have been sporadic; with
some birders failing to find them despite diligent searches.

BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS have appeared in both Carolinas. In NC, a bird was
observed at Winslow Sod Farm near Scotland Neck, NC. Call Chris Newton at
252-826- 4670 for details and directions. In SC, a single bird was in an
irrigation pool about 3.5 miles from the I-26 and US 301 intersection
towards Santee, SC.

REDDISH EGRETS are rare in the Carolinas but there are several sites in the
states where they can be found with some regularity. Sunset Beach in NC hosts
one or two birds each summer. Look on the flats on the island's west end.
This site is also good for WILSON'S PLOVERS. On 8-15, a MARBLED GODWIT was on
the flats.

Thanks this week to John Fussell, Frank Enders, Barbara Gearheart, and Chris
Newton for their calls and reports.
