Since the topic is on the table I'll add my two cents worth. I know of two
occasions here on Roanoke Island where Cooper's Hawks have been seen
feasting on Eastern Bushy-tailed Tree Rats (gray squirrels) in the last 7
months. The first squirrel was already "breath inhibited" so technically,
that immature Cooper's was doing the carrion thing. The second squirrel was
definitely killed by the hawk as it was witnessed.
