I noticed the post concerning waxwings and russian/autumn olive. We are
currently involved in the second year of a study looking at the influence of
Elaeagnus pugens (silver berry) on automobile-induced bird mortality. I
would be interested in hearing about any bird mortality witnessed near fruit
bearing exotic plantings. While our research is being conducted in VA, I
have noticed significat plantings of Elaeagnus in NC, especially in the
Raliegh/Durham area.
Now on a lighter note we are also surveying migrants and wayne's BTGN in
coastal NC. While traveling to some study sites I observed a Swallow-tailed
kite on the outerbanks. It was flying over rt 12 just south of the 64/158
junction on 4-8-01. Sorry about the late post, but I just started checking
this site for migration reports.
