spring birding trips at AR NWR

Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge announces the third field trip in
its spring birding series.
A canoe trip to Whipping Creek Lake will be held on Saturday, May 19th.
Whipping Creek is a seldom visited lake deep within the Refuge's interior.
The lake is not open to commercial touring outfitters and public access is
limited because of remoteness. Its quiet waters and dense surrounding
swamps are home to a wide variety of birds. Possible species include
pileated wood peckers, wood ducks, prothonotary warblers, great blue
herons, anhingas and osprey.
This will be a very enjoyable tour for those with the sensitivity to
appreciate nature in at its undisturbed best.
A moderate amount of paddling ability is required, but waters are flat and
calm and a brief paddle lesson will precede the trip. Binoculars, insect
repellant and drinking water are recommended.
The Coastal Wildlife Refuge Society, the Refuge's friends group, will
sponsor the trip. They will provide canoes, paddles, and personal
floatation devices. The fee is $30 per person for the three hour trip.
Reservations are required and can be made by calling the FWS Visitor Center
at 252-987-2394.
