birding safari at P Island

The US Fish and Wildlife Service will be celebrating International
Migratory Bird Day on Saturday, May 12th with its annual Birding Safari on
Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. The Safari will begin at 8am at
the Visitor Center. From there the group will travel to a variety of
locations scouting for migratory birds.

Likely birding spots include: South Pond and New Field ponds, in search of
shorebirds; the old Oregon Inlet Coast Guard Station, in search of
songbirds; and the north end salt flats for early arriving colonial
nesters. The program is
free and open to the public; reservations are not required. Anyone
interested should simply meet at the Visitor Center at 8am on Saturday, May
12th. Insect repellant, binoculars and spotting scopes are
recommended. For more information, call the Refuge Visitor Center
(252-987-2394).
