Penguins In Trouble Worldwide

C'Birders,

Today's Science Section of the New York Times recounts another, and all
too familiar scenario of birds in trouble. This time it is penguin
populations around the world which are seriously declining. Ten of the17
penguin species are already listed as threatened or endangered.
Researchers say that evidence is mounting that global warming, whether
natural, or human induced, is a prime cause. The warmer the waters, the
more difficult it is for the birds to find food and to breed. In the
warmest years, birds can fail to breed altogether, and large numbers of
adults can die of starvation.

Climate change also seems to promote the occurrence of "red tides" which
further decimate penguin populations. Not an encouraging prospect!

Sadly,
