Description of Work

EMPLOYEE WILL ASSIST IN THE MONITORING OF MOSQUITO-TRANSMITTED DISEASES
IN NORTH CAROLINA. WHICH INCLUDES SENTINEL CHICKEN FLOCK MAINTENANCE,
BLOOD SAMPLING, MOSQUITO COLLECTIONS AND IDENTIFICATIONS, WILD BIRD
MONITORING AND OTHER SELECTED MONITORING TECHNIQUES. THE EMPLOYEE WILL
WORK WITH LOCAL MOSQUITO CONTROL PROGRAMS TO IMPROVE THEIR EMERGENCY
RESPONSE CAPABILITIES. TRAINING OF LOCAL PROGRAM PERSONNEL WILL BE A
MAJOR COMPONENT OF THE JOB. EMPLOYEE WILL WORK CLOSELY WITH OTHER
STATE PERSONNEL ON LOCAL PROGRAM IMPROVEMENT. EXTENSIVE TRAVEL IS
REQUIRED. EMPLOYEE WILL WORK CLOSELY WITH LOCAL PROGRAM PERSONNEL ON
MOSQUITO CONTROL EQUIPMENT USE AND MAINTENANCE. EMPLOYEE WILL ASSIST
LOCAL MOSQUITO CONTROL PROGRAMS IN COMPUTER SOFTWARE USE. LABORATORY
PROCESSING OF SERA AND MOSQUITO POOLS FOR ARBOVIRUS DETERMINATION, AND
OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

ABILITY TO WORK IN A TEAM, TO CREATE TRAINING PROGRAMS AND CARRY THEM
OUT, TO WORK IN RUGGED TERRAIN AND INHOSPITABLE CONDITIONS, TO IDENTIFY
MOSQUITOES TO SPECIES LEVEL, TO WORK WITH ANIMALS, ESPECIALLY BIRDS.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY TO PERFORM LABORATORY TESTING OF SERA AND
MOSQUITO POOLS FOR ARBOVIRUS DETERMINATION. MUST HAVE AND MAINTAIN
VALID NORTH CAROLINA DRIVER'S LICENSE. MUST BE ABLE TO LIFT 50 OR MORE
POUNDS IF NECESSARY.

Training and Experience Requirements

GRADUATION FROM A FOUR-YEAR COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY WITH A MAJOR IN
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE, ECOLOGY OR A RELATED NATURAL SCIENCE
CURRICULUM AND TWO YEARS OF EXPERIENCE IN ENVIRONMENTAL WORK; OR AN
EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE. MINIMUM
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE FOR TRAINEE APPOINTMENT - GRADUATION FROM A
FOUR-YEAR COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY WITH A MAJOR IN ENVIRONMENTAL
SCIENCE, ECOLOGY OR A RELATED NATURAL SCIENCE CURRICULUM; OR AN
EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: STRONG BACKGROUND IN MOSQUITO CONTROL, ARBOVIRUS
MONITORING, EXPERIENCE AS A TRAINER, FAMILIARITY WITH MOSQUITO
SURVELILLANCE TECHNIQUES, EMERGENCY MOSQUITO CONTROL PROCEDURES,
COASTAL SALT MARSHES AND FRESH WATER SWAMPS, ULV AND OTHER MOSQUITO
CONTROL EQUIPMENT. COMPOSITION SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE IN SCIENTIFIC
PUBLICATION. KNOWLEDGE OF COMPUTER AND SOFTWARE USE FOR MOSQUITO
CONTROL RECORD KEEPING. EMPLOYEE MAY BE REQUIRED TO BE VACCINATED
AGAINST MOSQUITO-TRANSMITTED DISEASES AND OTHER DISEASES WHICH MAY BE
ENCOUNTERED DURING WORK.
