Greenview Purple Martin Staging Area?

Dear Birders,

For the past week or so, I've been seeing 30-50 purple martins hanging
around Greenview Pond. They like to roost on the light posts and roof tops
in our neighborhood. Last spring I put up 14 apartments but had no takers
during the nesting season. Today they seemed to be checking it out.
Hopefully they'll use them next season.

I've read that at this time of year they are fattening up for their fall
migration. Perhaps these martins are on their way to Lake Murray, SC where
between 500,000 - 750,000 gather before heading to South America.

Greenview Pond is located on Blaney Franks Road, just west of Lake Wheeler,
in Raleigh North Carolina. In spite of the fact that it's just a small farm
pond and marsh, the Wake County Audubon Society has observed over 200
species of birds there over the years.

Birders are always welcome to park in front of our house and bird watch from
our property.
We live at 2429 Lullwater Drive overlooking Greenview Pond. It's a wheat
colored house with a triangular window facing the street and a boardwalk to
the front door.
