Hello, this is an August 24 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. highlights on this report include:

CURLEW SANDPIPER
SHORT EARED OWLS
BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER
REDDISH EGRET
WHITE PELICANS

The CURLEW SANDPIPER at Pea Island NWR on the Outer Banks was still being
seen as of August 22. After crossing Oregon Inlet heading south, park on the
shoulder at utility post #38 and walk west towards the sound. The sandpiper
has been toward the back of the flats where water is still pooled. This adult
bird is rapidly molting out of breeding plumage.

SHORT-EARED OWLS have apparently bred at Alligator River NWR near the Outer
Banks. Enter the refuge from US 64 onto Milltail RD. Take the first left onto
Long Curve Rd. and begin looking over the fields there. Dawn or dusk is best
to look.

A BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was at the Orangeburg, SC sod farms on 8-19.

Up to 63 WHITE PELICANS were present at Bear Island WMA, Colleton County, SC
on 8-18.

An adult REDDISH EGRET is being seen at Sunset Beach, NC. Look on the east
end of the island for this bird first, instead of the usual west end
location. 41 WOOD STORKS are also being seen in the salt marshes around
Sunset Beach and Twin Lakes.

Spaces are still available on scheduled offshore birding trips from Manteo
,NC on August 26 and Sept. 2. Call Brian Patteson at 252- 986- 1363.

Thanks this week to Scott Barnes, Jeff Lewis, and Brian Patteson for their
calls and reports.
