Topsail spoil spoiled

Tracy and I stopped by the previously productive Topsail Island spoil site
over the weekend. We were disappointed to find that this area is not as
attractive to birds as it once was. It used to be quite reliable for the
pool-favoring shorebirds such as Stilt SP and the uncommon Wilson's
Phalarope. This year's visit revealed that much of the former flats are
overgrown with phragamites (sp?), a rather useless non-native plant (in my
opinion). In addition, the area has become extremely popular with off-road
enthusiasts who have created muddy tracks through the former loafing areas
for birds. The constant trill of two-stroke engines no doubt induces the
birds that might still be interested in the area to check out more serene
surroundings elsewhere. Present Saturday were a coot, a glossy ibis and an
unidentified shorebird.
