Hi All--
Indeed this is the first sighting of a Broad-billed Hummingbird in North
Carolina. There is one record for South Carolina It is very vague--maybe
someone else can post more on that. The other US records are pretty much
limited to the immediate Gulf Coast so this fella has wandered a significant
ways.
Congrats to Steve Schultz for snapping some good digital photos through his
scope yesterday. It provides a nice preview for those interested in this
rare bird. Documentation of this bird and it's activities is well under
way. Expect more daily updates.
I am trying to line things up to band the Parker's hummer next Thursday if
it is still around. It really seems to be settling in there. What a treat
for all of us--and less than a year after the mango!
Many thanks again to the Parker's for their hospitality. If you have not
scheduled a visit with them, please remember to call first and then stay
back in their driveway to view the hummer. From there, you will be plenty
close with a scope or binocs to view this marvelous hummingbird. Of course,
the less noise and movement, the better. I know this may be more of a
challenge over the weekend with some many folks huddled around...
Have a good day,
Susan Campbell
