Hello, this is an October 30 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report include:
SPRAGUE' S PIPIT
SNOW BUNTINGS
LAPLAND LONGSPUR
WESTERN KINGBIRD
EARED GREBE
CLAY-COLORED SPARROW
A SPRAGUES PIPIT was discovered at Cape Hatteras Point on Oct. 28 and was
seen again on the 29th. Some birders missed the bird today in the AM; but the
pipit could still be around. The bird has been seen in the short sparse
grassy area on the south side of the large salt pond at the point. Keep in
mind that a 4-wheel drive vehicle is recommended for driving out to the point
.
Other birds seen on the 29th in the same area as the pipit include SNOW
BUNTINGS, and a LAPLAND LONGSPUR.
At other sites on the Outer Banks, look for EURASIAN WIGEON at North
Pond;EARED GREBE at North Pond; and WESTERN KINGBIRD along Highway 12,
especially near South Pond .
CLAY-COLORED and LINCOLN'S SPARROWS have been seen recently at Fort Macon ,
near Morehead City, NC. Large numbers of sparrows have been gathering on the
outer slopes of the fort, on the right as you enter.
There have been numerous reports from both Carolinas of PINE SISKINS and
PURPLE FINCHES visiting feeders and flying overhead.
Thanks this week to John Wright, Brad Carlson, John Fussell, Jeff Lewis, and
Kim Garrett for their calls and reports.
