Audubon Society of Forsyth County Trip to Outer Banks 12/6-12/9/01

The Audubon Society of Forsyth County (Winston-Salem) and guests enjoyed a
spring like fall field trip to Matamuskeet and the Outer Banks this past
weekend. On Saturday everyone wished they had brought their shorts as the
temperature soared to 74 degrees at Hatteras! Notable sightings included;

4 White Pelicans at Matamuskeet (near wildlife drive) on Thursday December
6th.
An unidentified yellow-bellied type Kingbird flying north at a good distance
across Oregon Inlet on Friday December 7th.
A Great Cormorant on the old shipwreck across from the Pea Island visitor
center.
2 Western Kingbirds perched on the wires at milepost 53 south of Salvo.
Golden Eagles were seen at Matamuskeet NWR on December 6th and also at
Alligator River NWR (immature) (Miltail Road) on December 8th.

Other interesting sightings were three rails at Bodie Island. Virginia
Rails, Clapper Rail in the marshes to the south of the island, and a
beautiful King Rail.
The drought like conditions made it easier to see rails when they walked
from the grasses out to the water. A total of 117 species were seen by
everyone who attended.
