Southern Lake Norman CBC Report

Birders,
The Southern Lake Norman Christmas Bird Count on Dec. 16, 2001 turned up a
very respectable 97 species for the day. As might be expected, lingering
semi-hardy species were much in evidence. Highlights were GRAY CATBIRD
(reported by 2 groups for a total of 3), GREATER YELLOWLEGS, OSPREY,
BLUE-HEADED VIREO. Most unexpected was an imm. male COMMON GOLDENEYE on the
Catawba River. This duck usually doesn't appear in our area except during
extreme cold winters. As usual NORTHERN BOBWHITE was missed. Other
unfortunate misses were NORTHERN HARRIER , WILD TURKEY,and WOOD DUCK. Thanks
to all the leaders and participants who gave the circle the best coverage
ever for this count.
