Hello, this is a Jan 14 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report include:

GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE
ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER
CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD
CALIFORNIA GULL
RAZORBILL
Pelagic birding

The GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE near Southport, NC continues to be seen by lucky
birders. The bird visits an area where birdseed has been laid out, but visits
are not regular. Early AM to around 9:30 may be the best time to look. From
Southport take Hwy 211 toward the Fort Fisher ferry. Stay straight when 211
turns right to go to the ferry. The road ends, then take a right turn on
Shepherd Rd. Go about 1/4 mile to an area of tall dried weeds on the left.
Notice where an area has been cleared for the birdseed. Look for the towhee
here or elsewhere in the hedgerows and weedy areas. Do not get off the road
as the surrounding lands are private.

The ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER at Alligator River NWR in NC is still present.
>From US 64 enter the refuge on Milltail Rd. Take the first left (Long Curve
Rd) and proceed to Link Rd. on the left. Stop here and look for the
flycatcher in the woods on the left side of Link Rd. Do not cross into
restricted areas on the refuge.

Two CALIFORNIA GULLS have been reported from the Outer Banks. On 1-7 an adult
was at South Pond, and on 1-12 one adult was at Southern Shores on the beach
near 4th Avenue.

A RAZORBILL was reported from Wrightsville Beach near Mercer's Pier on 1-11.

In Gastonia, NC, a CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD is sharing a feeder with a RUFOUS
HUMMINGBIRD. Call Lillian Cheek at 704-865-5667 for directions and permission.

There is still space available on a pelagic birding trip out of Hatteras on
Jan.26. Call Brian Patteson at 252-986-1363 for details and reservations.

Thanks this week to Bill Hilton, Jeff Lewis, Dick Barmore, and Brian Patteson
for their calls and reports.
