sex-biased hatching in house finch populations, and lynx studies



Hi folks,

There are 2 very interesting articles in this weeks' Science Magazine 
that I thought some of you would like to see. The first is a research 
article describing how house finches in 2 separate populations 
(Alabama and Montana) bias the order in which they lay their male or 
female eggs to increase the size of their sons or daughters, 
facilitating rapid adaptive divergence. The other is a news report of 
some potential wrong-doing by researchers studying the range of the 
lynx in North America, by adding DNA samples from captive animals to 
supposedly wild samples. There is the potential for considerable 
political and environmental fall-out brought up in this story that is 
more widely applicable to all land use issues regarding the 
conservation of rare and endangered species (including birds).
