Count schedule; Lake Johnson in the news

Hi Carolinabirders,

In case anyone's heading north to DC or whereever for the weekend, I just
found out about a Dusky Flycatcher (one of the western Empidonax) in
Delaware at the Cedar Swamp Wildlife Area near Bombay Hook NWR. Not sure
when it first showed up, but there's one RBA mentioning it on January 17;
the most recent report is from the 29th. Apparently somebody banded it, so
presumably the ID has been confirmed in-hand.

Closer to home, Will Cook has put this year's count schedule up on the
Chapel Hill Bird Club website at
http://www.duke.edu/~cwcook/chbc/countsched.html
Spring counts start with Durham on April 28. The spring NAMC is May 11,
fall is September 21; hopefully I'll remember to write to Mr. Crutchfield
this year and arrange to do the NAMCs someplace a little more exciting
than Chatham County...

As long as Elisa mentioned Lake Johnson, I'll add that this week's
Independent has a short blurb on that very lake. Specifically, certain
members of the local government are attempting to preserve the surrounding
woods, while others are happy enough letting the area be developed. Not
entirely sure where I stand. On the one hand, the Triangle area is
historically lakeless and possibly duckless; on the other, with so many
wetlands elsewhere being destroyed or rendered virtually lifeless by
runoff, someday the little artificial lakes and ponds around here might
become waterfowl habitats important for more than just county bird
lists...

Good birding,

Josh
