USF&WS e-mail down (but not NPS); iced water, early nesting

Hi again,

Many thanks to all the respondents! About a dozen people have already
answered my query. Apparently the whole DOI on-line system, including
their e-mail, was shut down by the lawsuit (they're accused of having
insufficient protection against hackers and thus allowing funds for Native
Americans to be pilfered). It sounds like the NPS has had their e-mail
recently restored, but the USF&WS e-mail is still down with no sign of
re-opening it anytime soon. Meanwhile, a few friendly folks have sent me
Dennis' phone and fax numbers, so I can contact him that way.

Guess I should get one o'them birdbath heaters too. At least, I would if
my yard had any birds worth the trouble. A House Finch was perched on my
birdbath this morning, pecking at the edges of the ice, looking for a
drink. Hopefully the critters lasted, it should have melted by now.

Then, on my walk into school, saw a suspicious brown lump on a small
horizontal stretch of tree trunk. Resolved into a Mourning Dove brooding
on a nest. On March 5, with the temperatures still below freezing. Who'd
'a' thunk it...

Thanks again, y'all!

Josh
