Adaptibility of birds

Tom Joyces' recent story about train riding pigeons reminded me of this:
At a factory in Puerto Rico Cave Swallows used to build their nests on the
support beams of a bridge crane located in a building about 300 ft. long. I
guess the building looked somewhat like a cave and the ledges on the crane
support made a perfect place to locate nests. But, the crane ran the length
of the building and could be anywhere in the 300ft. length. It was amusing
to see the swallows fly into the building and immediately turn their heads
looking to see where their nest might be located at the moment. As far as I
could tell, the 20 or so nests were highly successful.
