Hummingbirds & St. Patrick

Although there are no hummingbirds in Ireland, we don't think St.
Patrick drove them all out. :-)

Hummers are native only to the Western Hemisphere, of course, but
Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History traditionally uses
St. Patrick's Day (17 March) as a time to remind folks to put up
their hummingbird feeders in anticipation of spring migration.

Ruby-throated Hummingbirds have already been seen in 2002 in several
Gulf Coast states, so it's only a mater of time before they arrive in
the rest of the U.S. and Canada. And western hummers such as
Black-chinned and Rufous Hummingbirds are also winging their way from
wintering grounds in Mexico and Central America. Thus, this reminder
applies to everyone north of the Rio Grande. :-)

For hints on selecting, hanging, and maintaining hummingbird feeders
at your home, school, or place of business, visit the Web site for
"Operation RubyThroat: The Hummingbird Project" at
http://www.rubythroat.org/FeedersMain.html .

Spread the word, and don't forget to put in a few flowers, shrubs,
and trees to provide a complete habitat for your nectar-sipping
visitors (see http://www.rubythroat.org/LandscapingMain.html ).

Happy Hummingbird Watching!
