Buckeye Trail birds

Hi all. On Saturday April 6 during Wake Audubon's monthly birdwalk on
Raleigh's Buckeye Trail greenway along Crabtree Creek we saw: 3 Great
Blue Heron nests, at least 2 with birds sitting in them. We also saw a
Barred Owl. It was cold...in the 30s and you had to feel for some of the
small migrants. Among the migrants we saw 8 Barn Swallows, 2
Rough-winged Swallows (near the eroded creek bank where they nested last
year), 50+ Yellow-rumped Warblers, 5 White-eyed Vireos, 1 Blue-headed
Vireo, 15 Blue-gray Gnatcatchers and 25+ Ruby-crowned Kinglets. These
birds were found flocking in Boxelders along the creek where they were
feeding on an infestation of small inchworms. We also heard Louisiana
Waterthrush and Common Yellowthroat. John Connors @ NC Museum of Natural
Sciences.
