Special Workshop

9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
at the Roanoke Cashie River Center
Windsor, NC

Featuring Connie Shertz, Senior Docent, N.C. Museum of Art, and other
presenters

WORKSHOP COMPONENTS
THE ART OF JOHN JAMES AUDUBON
Discover the art and ambition of renowned 19th-century nature artist John
James Audubon. Audubon conceived one of the most ambitious creative projects
ever imagined: to publish paintings of all the birds of North America
life-sized. Audubon's determination to portray each bird in its customary
habitat and activity and his flair for dramatic compositions make Audubon's
work as treasured in art museums as in the history of American nature
studies. Presented by Connie Shertz.

The North Carolina Museum of Art holds one of the original complete sets of
Audubon's first work, an enormous four-volume print set called The Birds of
America. Selections from this masterwork will be on exhibit at the Museum
from July 14 - December 1, 2002. The exhibition marks the centennial of the
formation of the Audubon Society in North Carolina.

CASHIE RIVER WETLAND WALK
Walk along the Cashie River and observe migratory songbirds such as warblers
and vireos making their springtime return to local forests and bottomlands.

NATURE AND JAPANESE ART TECHNIQUES
Learn traditional techniques of Japanese art and its close conection with
natural themes. Tour the Roanoke Cashie River Center grounds and discuss the
region's unique environment. Please bring sketchbooks and drawing pencils.
Presented by Linda Boyer, Environmental Educator, N.C. Estuarium.
