On Saturday morning Jane Chew and I hiked the Blue Wall Passage of the
Palmetto Trail in upper Greenville County (SC), starting from the parking
area just off Dug Hill Road near Tryon, NC. In four hours we had 14
warbler species, with many of them appearing in a large migrant flock that
took us by surprise almost at the trail's end. Our notable birds:
N. Parula (2)
Kentucky Warbler (2, both near the parking area)
Pine Warbler
Prairie Warbler
Hooded Warbler (many)
Ovenbird (many)
Black-throated Green Warbler (many)
Black-throated Blue Warbler (2+)
Worm-eating Warbler (2+)
Black-and-white Warbler (many)
Yellow-rumped Warbler (many)
CAPE MAY WARBLER (1, in a large mixed flock)
BLACKPOLL WARBLER (1, in a large mixed flock)
SWAINSON'S WARBLER (a surprise, but there he was, singing lustily in a
rhododendron hell next to a stream)
We also had Scarlet Tanager (2), Rose-breasted Grosbeak (2), and three
vireo sp. (White-eyed, Blue-headed, and Red-eyed).
