Hello, this is a May 6 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report include:
REEVE
LONG-BILLED CURLEWS
SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERS
SWALLOW-TAILED KITE
ICELAND GULL
A REEVE was present at the Ocean Isle Beach wastewater treatment plant on May
4th and 5th. Birders can enter the facility but should check in at the
office. Interested birders can contact Taylor Piephoff at 704-532-6336 or by
email at <PiephoffTaol.com >for more details.
LONG-BILLED CURLEWS have been seen at 2 locations in NC recently. On May 3
one bird was at the flats behind Crossover 4 on the Fort Fisher spit (
4-wheel drive required) and on 4-27 a curlew was at Cape Lookout near the old
Coast Guard dock.
SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERS are nesting near Monroe , NC in Union County. From
US 74 in Monroe , take Rte 200 south. 200 will turn right but you stay
straight. Now you will be on Rte 207 ( Hayne st.) Stay on 207 through town
and into the country. Turn right on Wolf Pond Rd at a blinking light. Go a
few miles, then look for Joe Collins road on the right. Begin looking for a
prominent sign on the left directing you to the flycatcher site by indicating
a left turn onto a dirt road/driveway.
AN ICELAND GULL continues to be seen following the ferries around the Cedar
Island terminal. This bird was reported on 4-26.
A SWALLOW-TAILED KITE was seen along Hwy. 15-501 near the Haw River Bridge in
Chatham County (NC) on 4-25.
Thanks this week to John Fussell, Kate Finlayson, Helmut Mueller, Bruce
Smithson, Cathy Abrams and Wayne Irvin for their calls and reports.
