6 Yellow Crowned Night Herons

This morning just after 8am, 6 adult yellow crowned night herons flew in to
the New Hope River waterfowl impoundment in Durham NC. The impound is
located on highway 54, between NC 751 (Hope Valley Road) and I-40. The
night herons perched in the dead trees beyond the end of the concrete
pavement, past the floodgate. Quite a magnificent sight! Two remained
perched for the entire hour that I was there, while the other four came down
to ground level, wading in the water and standing on fallen trees.
Other highlights were a prothonotary warbler, male and female blue
grosbeaks, indigo buntings, and phoebes. Also seen were great blue herons,
red headed woodpeckers, a red bellied woodpecker, gold finches, blue gray
gnat-catchers, cardinals, chickadees, titmice, brown thrashers, mocking
birds, grackles, and possibly immature pine warblers.
