Another bird sighting with SCAN this weekend was on one of our members
undeveloped land off NC 215 near Brevard. We were walking into the
property and saw 5 small baby Ruffed Grouses struggling to follow mamma
up an embankent covered with numerous wildflowers, saplings and small
eroded pockets which caused
a few babies to fall down and try repeated but ultimately successful
climbs to reach her in the undergrowth where she was making some worried
calls.
Also saw a baby Towhee precariously moving around the branches of a
shrub near the road as it's mother was calling from a little further in
the undergrowth.
A mother Mallard was guiding her 5 ducklings around the small pond on
site.
