Hello, this is a June 7 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report include:
WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL
SABINES GULL
ARCTIC TERN
REDDISH EGRET
SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERS
A subadult male WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL is coming to a feeder in Tega Cay, SC
(just south of Charlotte, NC). Call Liz Ciardi at 803-802-2631 for details
and directions. She is receptive to birders coming to see the bird.
A first year SABINE'S GULL was seen from Bald Head Island, NC on May 31 near
Cape Fear Pt.
An adult ARCTIC TERN was off the west end of Holden Beach, NC on May 29.
A dark adult REDDISH EGRET was seen at the east end of Harker's Island in NC
on May 27. The egret headed off to the north and out of sight. Later that day
at Cape Lookout Point 15 JAEGERS (pomarines id'd to species) were seen flying
past the point . Also seen were WILSON'S STORM PETREL and SOOTY SHEARWATER. A
WHIMBREL of the Eurasian race was seen near the old coast guard dock.
SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERS are nesting again south of Monroe, NC. From US 74
in Monroe, take Rte. 200 South. When 200 turns right, stay straight on Rte
207 (Hayne st.) Stay on 207 through town and a few miles south of town. Turn
right on Wolf Pond RD (A blinking light is here) . Go about 4 miles and look
for Joe Collins Rd on the right. Continue on Wolf Pond and look for a sign on
the side of the road directing birders to the flycatchers. Follow the signs
along the dirt roads to the nesting territory.
Thanks this week to Sam Cooper, Hal Broadfoot, John Fussell, and Liz Ciardi
for their contributions to this report.
