First Hummerpuppy of 2002

I banded the first fledgling Ruby-throated Hummingbird of 2002
yesterday (11 June) here at Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural
History. This is the third earliest fledgling since 1984, the other
two having been banded on 9 June (1994 and 2000). This "early"
fledging may (or may not) correspond with the fact that spring
migration was also earlier than usual this year.

All totalled, I've only banded 21 fledglings in June through the
years--ten males and 11 females. Interestingly, about half of those
were captured in nets rather than in pull-string traps. (My overall
average is about 5% net captures.)

On other matters, I should mention that my mailserver has been making
a shambles of incoming mail for the past few weeks. If you've sent me
a personal note and didn't get a response, it's probably because I
never received your posting. Please re-send. (In addition, last week
I had 50 megabytes of virus attachments that came in with more than
350 messages; fortunately, my Macintosh is essentially immune to the
infections.)

Happy Hummingbird Watching!
