bull-headed bluebirds

>>Hi! I hope you can offer some advice. I work in Piedmont, SC. We have a beautiful bluebird that hangs around here. Just this week, he began flying at the main door and a few long windows. I have tried to tape paper to the door to discourage him, but it did not work. I do not want him to hurt himself. Why is he doing this and what do we need to do?<<

I have had the same trouble with a pair of bluebirds at my bay window. Last year both male and female beat themselves silly against the window. They see the reflections and perceive them as "rogue" bluebirds invading their territory.

This year the bluebirds are less persistant and seem to be content sitting on a birdfeeder bracket, occasionally chattering and pecking at the reflection. I have been feeding them a peanut butter and cornmeal mixture this year, but that is the only new variable I can think of. I did, however, read recently that long strands of holographic ribbon hung in front of the window is quite effective. (I haven't use it for birds this year, but it does seem to work well at discouraging deer in my garden.)

Hope this helps,
---
