The single Great Blue Heron nest on Big Woods Rd., N. Chatham County, NC,
has 2 chicks in it. They are slightly different in age, but both have some
downy white feathers on their heads. The younger one appeared to snuggle up
against the older one a bit, very cute. Didn't see the adult, this was at
around 8:30 AM. Lee Van Malssen and I had just finished up with our Chatham
County MBBS route when we decided to detour and see the nest.
With the humidity nice and low, it was a very nice morning. One especially
birdy spot on our route is at the corner of N. Pea Ridge Rd. and Seaforth
Rd., on the way to Vista Point SRA, Jordan Lake, a scrubby area that had been
clearcut a few years back. Heard numerous N. Bobwhite, and saw birds
everywhere (on Seaforth Rd. section), but not at the exact spot we had to
stop and count, though did get to count 3 N. Bobwhite.
