Haw River directions

Since my last post several people have asked me directions to get to the
Haw River trail in Chatham County. So here they are:
Leave Chapel Hill on 15-501 headed south to pittsboro.
Just before you get to the Haw River you will see Bynum Road on the
left. Take it and go to the little hamlet of Bynum, past its country
grocery store. At Bynum Chapel Road go left and uphill. Go past the Chapel
and proceed one long block to where there are three forks. THe leftmost
fork is paved and the continuation of Bynum Chapel Road. The middle fork
is a dirt road and it becomes the Haw River Trail. The rightmost fork ends
in a dirty and abandoned parking lot where you should park and then walk
onto the middle road till you see a sign for Duke Forest and the road
thins to a trail. ALl of this is Duke Forest Land.

THe other worthwhile thing to do here is if instead of turning left onto
Bynum Chapel Road you continue on Bynum Road it will end in a few hundred
yards at Bynum Bridge which is an old unused bridge on which only
pedestrian traffic is allowed. This, in myestimation is one of the most
deligthful spaces in all of the Triangle since you are at the treetop
level and there are splendid views of the river on both sides. The two
together make a great excursion, evenin spite of the now-horrible drive
down 15-501 (road widening construction).

Remember Chris Canfield saw his Swallow Tailed Kite at this place a few
monhs ago.
