Josh, I've never used a hummer feeder with a "water trap," but I've read
that, if the water in the trap evaporates too quickly, you could put
cooking oil in it instead.

Granted, cooking oil would make the feeder you describe harder to clean,
but I don't think cleaning would be much more difficult for a trap that
hangs "in line" on the support for the feeder.

Gotta run & replace my hummer feeder, as a male hummer is bothering the
other birds in his search for the "missing" hummer feeder  --  for some
reason, I have found it on the ground twice in the last few days, so I
brought it in before my Labs get to playing with it!
