I made the trip back up to Roan Mtn. again to try to see that warbler and
again the weather was against me. I knew when I got to Newland and ran into
a wall of clouds, it wasn't going to be a pretty morning! Sure enough the
fog stayed with me all the way up to Carver's Gap, but since I had gotten up
at 4:45am and made the trip up there I decided to walk to the Grassy Bald
anyway! Caution! Anyone going up in the next couple of days, prepare to
have wet feet! The trail is now a flowing creek bed and is very slick!
Anyway, I did make it up to the bald and could only see 10 feet in front of
me at best. I was the for about 15 min. when I heard the Mourning Warbler
sing. Of course, he was alot further away than 10 feet. He never sang
again the next hour that I was there. I did here a Hermit Thrush singing
which made the time go by a little better. On the way back down to the gap,
I did get to see a pair of Alder Flycatchers that did come within 10 feet of
me. I may try one more time and hope the weather will cooperate with me for
once!
